MINI Mandela Day – Amakhaya Home

2013-07-20 08.00.16

Mandela annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each 18 July (on Mandela's birthday...and mine!!).  The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, since then it has been celebrated every year worldwide.   MandelaDay   MINI Drivers SA organised a Charity event for Mandela Day together with all the crazy MINIacs out there on the 20th of July 2013. MINIacs from all over South Africa gathered on Saturday morning at Auto Alpina MINI in Boksburg.  Thank goodness for the warm fresh coffee and the muffins, because it was a bit cold that morning.   MandelaDay   At about 10:00 we all left in a big convoy on our way to the Amakhaya/Rethabile Children's and Community Project, situated in Lenasia Johannesburg.  The Home is managed and founded by the retired couple Joyce Naicker and her husband.  The home was founded in 1994 as a NPO that would take in children who are in need, due to various circumstances.

There are currently 16 children at the home aged, between 3 and 22.  The organisation depends on donations from the local community and was overwhelmed with all the food, clothes, fruit, toys, blankets and all the other goodies that they received from all the MINIacs.

On arrival the event was opened with a prayer followed by the National Anthem.  Everyone put their hands together and painted the bedrooms for the boys and girls, whilst other fired up the grill to feed all the participants and the children 🙂

Click here to watch a video on MINI Drivers SA's website of some of the MINI's travelling to Lenasia.  Remmone from MINI Drivers SA said the aim was to break the record of the largest parade of MINI's in Africa.  We were only 91 MINI's, that's just 9 away from the breaking the close!!!

At the Amakhaya home they work with orphans, vulnerable children and women with drugs and alcohol abuse problems. The organisation also works with the community focusing on building stronger families so that they can build better communities.  Joyce also said the mission of the home is based on Isaiah 58:12 which reads: Go out and rebuild the community, restore, repair and unite...and that is exactly what Joyce and her husband are doing.

Auto Alpina MINI also had a competition for Mandela Day on their Facebook and Twitter pages. The facebook winner was @Big_Kabz and the twitter winner was...*drum roll*.....ME....yay!!! Thank you Auto Alpina for having the competition!!

If you want to view some of the photos of the event, go check out Skye Photography's facebook page....lots of pics!!

It was a lot of fun driving around town with all the MINIacs whilst putting charity first!

Until next year 🙂

Birthday Picnic Willow Feather Farm

Yesterday was my birthday, yes I share my birthday with Madiba, and my sister 🙂 Since Dewald and I started dating I always wanted to go and have a picnic somewhere.  We never got to do it and I think Dewald isn't really into the picnic thing. So yesterday I got this big surprise, we went for a picnic on my birthday....AWESOME!!! Dewald couldn't have picked a better place for a picnic, Willow Feather Farm, situated next to the R21, close to the Irene Mall.  Willow Feather Farm  supplies indigenous trees to retail and wholesale customers, but they also have a nursery, tea garden, farmyard, kids party place and of course the picnic facilities. When we arrived they gave us blankets and said we must go and pick a spot. they gave us a few minutes and brought the picnic basket and the menu to order drinks. Since it was a bit cold yesterday, we looked for a spot with little or no wind and lots of sunshine.   WillowFF   The picnic basket was filled with yummy food, salads, cookies, fresh bread, dried fruit and nougat....mmmm And to drink I ordered the best strawberry milkshake I have ever tasted, served in a big glass topped with fresh cream and a cherry, delish!!   WillowFF   After our picnic we walked through the farmyard looking at all the animals from pot belly pigs, sheep, goats, swans, ducks, rabbits and the weird looking alpacas, their eyes kinda freaked me out.  I watched an episode of Dirty Jobs once where they were shearing alpacas for their wool, the alpacas would fight back by spitting boogers at the shearer, so I was a little cautious....especially when he pulled a face like this!!   WillowFF   My favourite was the goats (French Alpine/ Ober Hasly).  This little guy was so cute I just wanted to take him home with me!   WillowFeatherFarm   Overall it was a fun picnic and I really enjoyed it.  My first picnic and it was on my birthday!!     #MINIQueen

Fourways Farmers’ Market

FFM   A couple of weeks ago we started Juicing, and if you went on Joe's website you would have seen that juicing means lots of fruit and vegetables.  Dewald and I have been going to different food markets in and around Johannesburg in search of fresh farmers' produce. Last Sunday we went to Fourways Farmers' Market, across the road from MonteCasino. We were really impressed with everything at the market, great food, fresh produce, desserts and a very relaxed atmosphere where  everyone was walking around through the stalls, eating, drinking and just enjoying themselves. We first tried a croquette with mustard, which was awesome.  Lets say that was our starter 🙂 For our main meal, we had a balkan burger from the Balkan Burger Bar.  Would go back to the market just for that burger, that is how good it was! FourwaysFarmersMarket   Dessert was a very difficult choice to make from pastries, pancakes, muffins, cupcakes, tarts, cakes to ginormous waffles with cream and strawberries....mmmm.  Everything looked mouth watering, the big carrot cake muffin caught my eye and Dewald went for a slice of peppermint crisp tart. FourwaysFarmersMarket   Fourways Farmers' Market was definitely one of the best markets we went to. They are open every sunday from 9AM - 2PM. With about 61 vendor stalls, there is plenty to choose from, from fresh produce, organically grown vegetables and herbs, farm eggs, locally made cheeses, cured meats and locally designed goods.   Go check out their website on the link below for some great outdoor entertainment : Fourways Farmers' Market   Cheers 🙂 #MINIQueen

Review: The Harvard Cafe – Grand Central Airport

HarvardCafe   The Harvard Cafe is situated at the Grand Central Airport Midrand, in the Main Terminal Building. We have been there a couple of times, and really enjoyed it, great food, good service, and then all the airplanes and helicopters that are right next to you, taking off or coming in for a landing...all while you sit and enjoy your meal. My favourite is the Harvard Burger with Chips, a 130g Fillet Steak with garnish and sauce on a fresh roll.....yummy!!   HarvardBurger   The Harvard Cafe has specials almost everyday...from the Monday Madness - 1/2 price on ALL their Pizza's, to their Tantalising Tuesday - 1/2 price on ALL their main Seafood dishes and then there is a Wednesday special as well - 1/2 on their Steaks and Ribs.....and the list goes on and on.     Not only does The Harvard Cafe have good food and service, they also cater for functions and parties, Buffets, Spit Braais to snack platters, and a playground/jungle gym for the kids.  They even have a shuttle service available from the Midrand Gautrain Station. So if you just want to have a relaxed lunch or a quick business breakfast, The Harvard Cafe is the place to go!! Oh and if you feel like getting dessert, do yourself a favour and order the Harvard Pudding.  I must be honest, at first it looked like they made a hash of it, because of the presentation, but damn, it tasted awesome.....great way to end your meal 🙂 Go check it out!!!!   #MINIQueen

MINI Market Day

On the 1st of May 2013, Auto Alpina MINI in Boksburg had a MINI Market Day. A day filled with fun, competitions, painting MINIs, Morgan Beatbox, food, drinks and lots more. Most importantly, the whole day was for a good cause, The St. Francis Children's Home! During the day they handed out prizes to random people that had to answer an easy question, and I was one of the lucky ones, and won a lunch voucher for 2 at the Protea Hotel O.R Tambo. Dewald and I went there today, and had an awesome buffet. The service was VERY good, exceptional really.  The restaurant has a real "airporty" atmosphere!

So THANK YOU Auto Alpina MINI, for a great MINI Market Day and the awesome lunch!!!!

8 Top Food Allergens

Do you suffer from an allergy? Did you know that since January 2006, all food producers have been required to identify the presence of certain top food allergens in products? These are, simply, the foods most likely to cause an allergic reaction, ranging from itches to anaphylaxis. It is required by the FALCPA ( Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act) that they are listed on the label used as an ingredient, but in some other cases, they can be considered contamination from common use of processing equipment for different products. In this case, there must be a warning on the label of the possibility of contamination. Continue reading "8 Top Food Allergens"

6 Top Secret Facts About Women

hardworking As a group, women do a really good job of hiding our less attractive qualities. We cover up our imperfections with makeup, we squeeze our “winter weight” into some Spanx, and we make our friends take our phones away so the guy we’re crushing on doesn’t know how crazy we really are. And that is only scratching the surface. Because men look at us like pretty, little, delicate flowers, there are so many things about women that most guys just do not know. Things that most women would be horrified to share and most men would be even more disgusted to know. But you know what? I don’t care. Women are people, too, and if guys can walk around scratching their balls, then we should be able to lay it all out there, too. Continue reading "6 Top Secret Facts About Women"
